Gardaí are treating as suspicious the death of a woman who was found dead at her home in Dungarvan, Co Waterford, yesterday. The woman was named as Ms Lorraine Crowley (36).

Her body was discovered at her home near the town centre at about 8 a.m. She was found dead in her bed by a family member. There was no one else in the house at the time.

Members of the Garda Technical Bureau were called in, and the scene was preserved for forensic examination.

A preliminary examination of the body was carried out by the State pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, at the scene. She performed a full post-mortem yesterday evening at Waterford Regional Hospital.

Garda Supt Michael Blake, Dungarvan, said a relative of Ms Crowley had called to the house yesterday morning and found her dead. Gardaí concluded her death was suspicious.

They are awaiting the results of the post-mortem before deciding if the investigation should be upgraded to a murder inquiry.

The dead woman has a 13-year-old son who was staying with relatives on Wednesday night.

According to local sources, she was from the town, and many extended family members also live in Dungarvan.
