Winter bug shuts wards

The number of people affected by the winter vomiting virus at hospitals in the south-east continued to rise yesterday.

At Waterford Regional Hospital, an additional 11 staff and one patient are thought to have contracted the virus.

Visiting restrictions have been lifted in most areas of the hospital. However, one medical and one orthopaedic ward remain closed to visitors.

The South Eastern Health Board is appealing to members of the public to adhere to visiting restrictions and is asking anyone who has been in contact with a person who has had the winter vomiting virus to stay away from the hospital.

Meanwhile, two new suspected cases of the virus have been reported at St Canice's Hospital, Kilkenny.

Seven patients are in isolation at the psychiatric hospital and two members of staff are off duty having displayed symptoms consistent with the virus. The hospital has been closed to visitors to curb the spread of the virus.
