Venus Williams eased past British teenager Jane O'Donoghue to get her campaign for a third consecutive Wimbledon title up and running on Centre Court today.

O'Donoghue, the British number seven, was comprehensively beaten 6-1 6-1 but warmed up the crowd during her unlikely 45 minutes of fame.

Wild card O'Donoghue earned a moment to remember in the second game of the second set when two jarring low shots down the line onto Williams' forehand helped her to break the world's top player.

But Williams made no more mistakes and cruised through the remainder of the match to book a second round match against Virginia Ruano Pascual - last year's conqueror of Martina Hingis.
