Wicklow man is Macra president

The new president of Macra na Feirme, the young farmers' organisation, is Mr Thomas Honner, a farmer from Co Wicklow.

The new president of Macra na Feirme, the young farmers' organisation, is Mr Thomas Honner, a farmer from Co Wicklow.

The Danesfort, Kiltegan man won yesterday's vote for the honour of leading the 8,000-strong organisation for the next two years.

He beat his rival, Mr Richard Moloney, Donohill, Co Tipperary, in a closely fought contest which saw him emerge victor at the counting of votes in the organisation's head office in Dublin yesterday.

The 32-year-old single farmer runs a mixed farm operation at Kiltegan where he joined Macra na Feirme in 1998.

He worked his way through the ranks from club to national level and is currently serving as national vice-president, Leinster.

Mr Honner is well known in rugby circles in Leinster and is a member of Tullow Rugby Club and the local Show Society.
