A white couple in Britain has given birth to black twins in an in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) mix-up at a state-run fertility clinic, officials said today.

"We are not able to comment because the case is covered by a legal injunction which has been led by couple A," an NHS spokeswoman said.

The Sunnewspaper reported that the couple wants to keep the children after forming a bond, and that a court battle to determine the "real" parents could lie ahead.

A source at the NHS trust involved in the incident told the newspaper: "It is something that we have dreaded happening all along ... It is an absolute nightmare for all concerned."

The source added: "Great steps have been taken to ensure that this sort of thing never happens. It must be a one in a million chance. The big problem now is, who are the real parents of the twins?"

IVF is sought when adults are unable to have children naturally. The technique is used by about 27,000 couples in Britain every year.
