Five people were shot dead and a sixth seriously injured when armed men attacked a wedding celebration near Algeria’s eastern border with Tunisia, Algeria’s official news agency said today.

The shootings took place yesterday in the village of Stah Guentis - about 70 miles south of the eastern town of Tebessa, APS news agency reported.

APS said the identities of the gunmen were not immediately known. Four of the victims died at the scene, and another on way to hospital.

The region around Tebessa is known as a hub of contraband and other illegal trafficking.
