Gardaí are investigating the unauthorised use of the Irish Red Cross name on a website used to sell used cars.

Internet company Yahoo yesterday closed down the website, www.redcross-ireland.com, after complaints from the Irish Red Cross.

The site purporting to be from the Irish Red Cross, which appeared to be US-based, claimed it had received five cars as donations from Irish citizens.

The cars were offered for sale for up to $7,000 with the commitment that the money would be used to help people in need.
