Weapons haul uncovered in Co Westmeath

Gardaí have discovered a small quantity of arms and explosives in a wood in Co Westmeath.

Gardaí have discovered a small quantity of arms and explosives in a wood in Co Westmeath.

The discovery was made this morning in a densely wooded area on the shores of Lake Derravargh, Crookedwood, Co. Westmeath.

A Garda spokesman said the haul consists of two detonators, apparent component parts of mortar devices and what appears to be half a stick of gelignite.

He said initial examination indicates that the items are not of recent origin.

The area has been sealed off and further searches are being carried out.

An army team has also been called to the scene.
