West Bromwich Albion striker Lee Hughes remained in police custody tonight after being detained on suspicion of causing the death of a car passenger whose vehicle was in collision with the star's Mercedes.

Hughes, 27, surrendered himself at Coventry's Little Park Street police station this morning after allegedly leaving the scene of the accident on the outskirts of the city early on Sunday.

A West Midlands Police spokesman, who declined to confirm the name of the arrested man, said: "A 27-year-old man from Meriden, near Coventry, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop after an injury road traffic collision."

Hughes' silver Mercedes CL55 coupe and a Renault Megane collided in Pickford Grange Lane, near Meriden, shortly after midnight. Douglas Graham, 56, a rear seat passenger in the Megane, died from his injuries.

Meanwhile, Albion confirmed that the player would take no part in tomorrow's clash with Cardiff City at Ninian Park after failing to turn up for training.
