A large pipeline providing water to many areas of Dublin city has been closed down after it was damaged this evening.

Dublin City Council said a number of areas would experience a significant reduction in water pressure and in some cases a loss of supply because the main at Marrowbone Lane partly burst.

Among the affected areas are Fairview, Clontarf, Killester, Raheny, Artane, Ballymun, Whitehall, Glasnevin and Drumcondra.

Other locations such as James Street, Inchicore, Baggot Street and Kilmainham are also experiencing problems with supply.

"This water main has now being shut down and work is commencing to carry out the repair and this we would hope will be completed over night," Dublin City Council said on its website.

"Work is ongoing to supply water to the areas affected by using alternative supplies."

Gardai are advising motorists to avoid Marrowbone Lane, Thomas Court, South Earl Street and School Street area while the works are carried out.
