The public is being warned about hoax calls offering a tax refund of €2,000.

Callers posing as Department of Finance officials, seek personal information from taxpayers in order to claim a refund.

The hoax callers are telling people that they are due a refund of €2000 but will have to pay a €250 deposit in lieu of tax into a bank account to get the refund.

The Department of Finance warns that these calls are not coming from their office and that it never calls members of the public in relation to refunds or payments.

Anyone who provided bank details in response to these calls are urged to contact their bank or credit card company immediately.
