A hillwalker was airlifted from a mountain in Co Wicklow today after injuring his leg.

The man hurt his lower leg at about 1.50pm while walking on Corrigasleggaun. He was with a group, believed to be from Northern Ireland, who were  making their way to Lugnaquilla, the highest peak in Leinster.

His companions tried to carry him down from the hill themselves but were unable to.

The alarm was raised and members of the Glen of Imaal and Dublin/Wicklow mountain rescue teams scrambled to the scene.

The man was airlifted by the Irish Coastguard helicopter to Baldonnell at 3.10pm. He has been transferred to Tallaght hospital.
