Sixteen suspected Islamic militants and an Indian army officer were killed today in three separate clashes, and two people were killed in a landmine blast, Indian officials said.
Among those gunned down by India's security forces on the frontier between India and Pakistan in the disputed state of Kashmir were 10 militants believed to be Bangladeshis, an official said.
In one clash, six militants were killed in the Mendhar area of southern Poonch district, some 240 kilometres west of Jammu, the winter capital of Indian Kashmir.
The source said that in the clash an Indian army officer was killed. Arms and ammunition was retrieved from the site of the encounter, which took place at the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border between India and Pakistan in Kashmir.
