A suspicious suitcase triggered a bomb scare that shut Vienna airport's main terminal for about two hours today but a bomb squad found only clothes inside, police said.

Police evacuated the terminal after an initial test of the unattended suitcase came back positive for possible explosives.

Bomb experts used a robot with a high-pressure water gun to open the suitcase, but only clothes and sundry travel items fell out.

"It was a completely normal suitcase like you pack when you go on a trip," interior ministry spokesman Major Rudolf Gollia said.

Terminal One is the larger of two terminals at the airport, which is owned and Flughafen Wien.

Austria is militarily neutral and refrained from either supporting or loudly criticising the US-led invasion of Iraq.

The airport is used by tourists to Austria as well as for transfer flights between east and west Europe. In December 1985, four people were killed and more than 30 wounded when three attackers tossed hand grenades and opened fire at passengers checking in for a flight with Israeli carrier El Al.
