A NEW episcopal vicar for evangelisation has been appointed in the archdiocese of Dublin, the first appointment of its kind in the history of the diocese.

Fr Ciarán O'Carroll will head up a major programme of evangelisation in Dublin, first announced on Holy Thursday by Archbishop Diarmuid Martin. The archbishop has invited all 200 Dublin parishes to join in a common programme of missionary outreach and evangelisation for 2009.

The new office will lead the project, co-ordinating the work of education in the faith, liturgical and scriptural animation, outreach to young people, and work for justice and charity.

Currently parish priest of Saggart, Co Dublin, Fr O'Carroll is an expert in ecclesiastical history.
