Caracas - The Venezuelan president, Mr Hugo Chavez, proposed yesterday that his country's name be changed to honour its favourite son, the 19th century independence hero Simon Bolivar.

He said in Caracas that a popular assembly due to be elected on Sunday should christen the country the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
