Short-term visitors from Ireland to the United States will no longer need a visa under new legislation signed by President Clinton.

The measure makes permanent a pilot programme introduced in 1988 and extended to Ireland in 1994, under which foreign nationals could enter the US without a visa so long as US citizens enjoyed reciprocal rights.

The waiver applies to business or tourist visitors not intending to spend more than 90 days in the US.
