US police believe that a decapitated body found in an abandoned car in Virginia yesterday is that of missing Irish nun, Sister Philomena Fogarty.

Sister Fogarty was abducted along with another nun from her home in Hamilton, Georgia by a 25-year-old man accused of killing his father.

The gruesome find was made yesterday at a marshy area after people hunted down Adrian O'Neill Robinson, who fled on foot. The feet and hands had also been cut off the body.

Sister Fogarty has been abducted along with another nun, Sister Lucie Kristofik, who was later released. Police believe O'Neill Robinson first tried to steal a car at a church in front of their home and then took the two nuns as hostages. Harris County, Georgia sheriff Mike Jolley said that the decapitated body has tentatively been identified.

Norfolk police spokesman Chris Amos said authorities were still waiting for the medical examiner's office to identify the body.

Norfolk police spotted Robinson driving a car on a dead-end street about 3:30 a.m. yesterday. A half hour later, police in neighbouring Virginia Beach discovered the decapitated body of a woman in a parking lot.
