Edgartown, Mass. - The White House said yesterday the US was not involved in a bombing in Afghanistan that killed at least 10 people near the residence in Kandahar of the supreme leader of the Taliban.

"We're aware of the explosion but we're not aware of the origins of that explosion beyond knowing that it was not something we were involved in," a White House spokesman, Mr Joe Lockhart, told reporters covering President Clinton's vacation.

The Taliban said yesterday the supreme leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar, escaped unhurt in the bombing.
