The number of people filing initial claims for US unemployment benefits rose 33,000 to a seasonally adjusted 385,000 in the week to August 4th, the US Labor Department said today.

The rise was within the consensus forecast of Wall Street economists for jobless claims to rise 32,000 to 378,000.

A four-week moving average of initial jobless claims fell 16,000 to 380,000 - the lowest level since the week to March 31st.

In basic terms, claims rose 4,067 to 339,378 last week. There were 266,854 claims in the comparable week last year.
