THE US ambassador, Mrs Jean Kennedy Smith, announced the second annual Youth Conference on the Environment during a visit yesterday to Greendale Community School in Kilbarrack, Dublin. The conference will take place in the ambassador's residence on April 22nd, and will involve 130 students from 14 schools throughout Ireland.

Greendale is best known for its association with the new generation of Irish writers. Roddy Doyle, Paul Mercier, the playwright, and Catherine Dunne, whose novel In the Beginning has just been published, have all been teachers in the school. However, Mrs Kennedy Smith visited the school because of its participation in the GLOBE project, an environmental programme set up by US Vice President Al Gore.
