Up to 29 people died in a collision between a minibus and a truck on a highway near the Sudanese capital, a Sudanese newspaper reported today.

The privately-owned al-Khartoum paper said the vehicles, which had been travelling in opposite directions, collided on Saturday on a 120-km (74 miles) paved highway linking the capital to the town of Shendi in the north.

It said 29 people died and five others were injured.

Another paper put the death toll at 18 and said eight people were injured.
