The United Nations Security Council was called into emergency session today for consultations on the Middle East, the UN spokesman's office said.

The council is to meet at 6 p.m. (10 p.m. Irish time), the office said, without stating the reason for the consultations.

A short while earlier in Jerusalem, Israeli public radio said the government had withdrawn approval for a UN fact-finding team to visit the devastated West Bank Palestinian refugee camp of Jenin.
