A teenager charged in connection with two attempted armed robberies of post offices in Limerick this week told gardaí he had a gun put to his head, a court heard yesterday.

Two 17-year-olds appeared before Limerick District Court yesterday, charged in connection with the incidents at Garryowen and Clonlara post offices.

The youths, who cannot be named for legal reasons, each face four charges arising out of the attempted robberies, which took place on Tuesday morning.

The court heard one of the teenagers said to gardaí: "I only did that because I was threatened. I had a gun put to my head", after he was formally charged.

He added: "I don't own a gun. I would not have done any of that if I wasn't threatened."

Both teenagers face two charges of attempted robbery and two charges of carrying a firearm with criminal intent at Garryowen and Clonlara post offices on November 6th.

One of the teenagers did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody to St Patrick's Institution. The second was granted bail on strict conditions and was ordered to sign on daily at Mayorstone Garda station in Limerick.
