A man and woman were being questioned by gardaí tonight after drugs squad officers stopped a car in Co Westmeath and seized €120,000 worth of cannabis.

The planned swoop was at Daleystown, Mullingar, and involved officers assigned to Operation Anvil to crack down on drugs gangs.

A man aged 36 and a 50-year-old woman were arrested and being quizzed by detectives.

A garda spokeswoman said the pair were being detained at Mullingar Garda Station under of Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act.

Gardai are carrying out forensic tests on the drugs, she said. According to figures from the Department of Justice issued last month, Operation Anvil has led to 2,028 arrests.

More than 9,000 for drugs have taken place with 505 illegally held firearms seized along with 4,410 vehicles that were either stolen or should not have been on the road.

The number of checkpoints established has reached 28,105 and the value of stolen property recovered has now reached almost €8 million.
