The conditions in a poitin production unit raided in Co Monaghan early yesterday were described as unhygienic by Gardai.

The farm outhouse at Aughramore, Cullaville, was raided by gardai and detectives from Carrickmacross. Another house was searched in Magheracloone, Carrickmacross, and bottles of the illicit spirit were seized.

Over 200 gallons of poitin, said to be close to pure alcohol in strength, were dumped and the plant in the outhouse dismantled.

Two people were questioned in Carrickmacross yesterday and gardai said a file would be prepared for the DPP.
