An undercover Garda drugs campaign in Longford, known as Operation Clean Street, resulted in two local men receiving jail sentences yesterday.

A number of other cases were adjourned after Judge John Neilan ruled that gardaí should produce evidence of the safe movement of drugs through their forensic analysis laboratory.

The court heard how gardaí set up a major undercover operation in the town of Longford earlier this year.

Garda Hugh Cullen and Garda Michael Doyle, from the National Drugs Unit, went undercover and mingled with local people to discover the supply lines in the local drugs scene.

As a result, Patrick Doyle (45), Richmond Street, Longford, was sentenced to 22 months in jail for possessing and supplying ecstasy and possessing amphetamines.

Another man, Vincent Mulligan, Trinity Temple, Longford, was given an 11-month suspended jail sentence for supplying amphetamines to Garda Cullen and Garda Doyle.
