A man and a woman have died in separate road crashes in Co Mayo and Co Kildare.

A 26-year-old man has died in a collision on the Swinford to Foxford road at about 1am when the car hit a concrete post. There were no other vehicles involved in the crash, gardaí said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road has been closed of to traffic and diversions are in place.

Separately, a woman died in a single-vehicle crash in Naas, Co Kildare yesterday evening.

The 50-year-old woman was killed when the car she was driving hit a fence at Derryvogue, Naas. She was the only occupant of the car. Her body was removed to Naas General Hospital.

The road is currently closed pending an examination by Garda forensic collision Investigators. Gardaí in Naas are seeking witnesses to the crash.

Some 225 people have died on the State's roads so far this year - 39 fewer than the number who had died by this date in 2008.
