Two die in separate collisions

Two people have died as a result of separate road traffic collisions in Cos Leitrim and Westmeath over the weekend.

Two people have died as a result of separate road traffic collisions in Cos Leitrim and Westmeath over the weekend.

This morning a 22-month-old baby boy died from injuries after being struck by a car in the Coillín Buí estate, Moate, Co Westmeath, at 1.45pm on Saturday.

He was taken to Mullingar General Hospital before later being transferred to Temple Street in Dublin where he died today.

The collision is under investigation.

Last night a 25-year-old woman was killed in a single vehicle crash at Drumard, Dromad, Co Leitrim.

The woman died when the car she was driving crashed at about 10pm. She was the sole occupant of the car.

Her body was removed from the scene to Sligo General Hospital where a postmortem examination is expected to be carried out today.

The road at the scene remains closed pending an examination of the area by Garda forensic officers.
