Two people have been killed in separate road crashes in Cos Mayo and Westmeath.

An elderly woman pedestrian died after being knocked down near Ballinrobe last night.  The woman (84) was hit at Ballinrobe Demesne  at about 8.35pm.

She was taken to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar where she was pronounced dead an hour later.

Meanwhile, a man (32) died this morning when the car he was driving crashed at Tyrellspass in Co Westmeath this morning. There were no other vehicles involved.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and was removed to the mortuary in Mullingar.

The westbound carriageway of the N6 has been closed between Tyrellspass and Kilbeggan until further notice. Diversions are in place.

Neither victim has been named by gardaí.
