A man and a woman have been killed in separate road traffic incidents in Clare and Galway.

A 36-year-old woman died when the car she was driving hit a tree after leaving the northbound carriageway of the N18 at Hurler's Cross near Shannon at about 5.00am.

The body of the woman, who was alone at the time, was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital. There were no other vehicles involved. The road was closed for a forensic examination but has since reopened.

Four hours earlier, a pedestrian in his 30s died after being hit by a car on the R336 at Salahoona, Spiddal. He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to University College Hospital Galway.

The road remains closed and diversions are in place.
