Two motorcyclists, including an off-duty garda, have died in separate crashes today.

Two motorcyclists, including an off-duty garda, have died in separate crashes today.

One man died when his bike was in collision with a car on the Headford Road at Curraghline in Galway shortly after 3pm.

The female driver of the car was taken to University Hospital Galway with minor injuries. Motorists have been advised to avoid the area this evening.  Witnesses to the crash should contact gardai at Mill Street.

Separately, a 36-year-old motorcyclist died in a collision near Roscrea on the N7, a mile on the Limerick side of the town at about 3.50pm.  The man's motorcycle was also in collision with a car.

The deceased was an off duty Garda attached to Donnybrook Garda station, a Garda statement said.

He has been removed to Nenagh hospital a post mortem examination will be carried out tomorrow.

"The sole occupant of the car, a woman, was injured and taken to Nenagh hospital. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening," the Garda statement added.

Traffic from the Dublin direction is diverting to Templemore and traffic from Limerick is also diverted at Ballinakill into Roscrea. These diversions will remain in place for a number of hours.

This matter has been referred to the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission.
