FOUR children were taken into temporary care by the Southern Health Board yesterday after their Romanian parents were charged with abandoning them.
Mr Austrian Stancu and Ms Liliana Paul, of Knockmore Gardens, Tallaght, Dublin, left the children aged between seven years and one year, in a ear in Cork while they went begging on the city streets.
They were charged with abandoning Sylvester (7), Cristia (5), Adela (4) and Ricardo (1) on August 1st at Grattan Street, Cork, in a manner that would cause them unnecessary suffering or injury to their health.
The couple do not speak English and details of the arrest and charges were outlined to them by a friend, who interpreted the proceedings in the Cork District Court for them.
A Southern Health Board solicitor indicated to Judge Terenee Finn that the board would be applying for a temporary care order in respect of the children. This application was heard in camera and an eight day order was granted to the board by the judge.
The couple were remanded on bail to appear before the court next week after Insp Pat Diggan indicated they would have to await the instructions of the DPP in respect of the charge.
