Twelve people were killed and two were injured today after a bus and a truck crashed head on in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, security sources said.

The accident happened near the town of el-Arish in northern Sinai about 250 km east of the capital, Cairo, the sources said.

All the victims were travelling on the local bus, which was mainly carrying workers from a nearby cement factory.

Egypt has one of the world's highest road accident rates, largely due to speeding, reckless driving and bad road conditions. Yesterday, 15 people were killed when a bus overturned and burst into flames south of Cairo.
