Trinity College Dublin announced 16 new fellows, one honorary fellow and 67 scholars in a ceremony that marked the beginning of Trinity Week in Dublin yesterday.
The fellowships were awarded to nine men and seven women for their work in research and teaching and for their general contribution to the academic life of the college.
Two fellowships were awarded to professors while others went to those with doctorates in subjects such as political science, computer science and business studies.
The scholars are elected annually in various subjects on the basis of an examination.
Ten scholarships were awarded to students of medicine while other subjects covered included history, economic and social studies and human genetics.
Other Trinity Week activities include a symposium, "Towards Equality in Education" which will be held tomorrow; the annual College Races and the Provost's Garden Party.
