Ulster Unionist Party leader Mr David Trimble is to meet Taoiseach Mr Ahern today as part of efforts to restore devolved government in Northern Ireland.

This afternoon's talks in Government buildings were taking place as political parties await a package from the Taoiseach and British Prime Minister Tony Blair next month.

The meeting is one of number between parties since the Hillsborough Castle talks failed to reach agreement on all sides.

The two leaders are due to present a new set of proposals next month in the hope that Assembly elections can take place at the end of May.

A Government spokeswoman said Mr Trimble was expected to brief the media after today's 4.30 p.m. meeting.
