The Special Criminal Court in Dublin yesterday fixed October 2nd next year as the date for the trial of a Co Louth farmer previously described in court as a leading member of the "Real IRA".

Mr Liam Campbell (38), of Upper Faughart, Dundalk, Co Louth, is charged with membership of an illegal organisation styling itself Oglaigh na hEireann, otherwise the Irish Republican Army, otherwise the IRA, on October 3rd last.

During a bail application which lasted three days last month, Det Supt Peter Maguire, of the Special Detective Unit, said that Mr Campbell played a central role in the day-to-day management, control and direction of the "Real IRA".

The court fixed the trial date and remanded him in custody until then.
