Unions representing transport workers have called off a four-hour work stoppage planned for Monday after accepting an offer of talks from the Minister for Transport Mr Brennan.

The National Bus and Railworkers Union (NBRU) and SIPTU took the decision after a meeting this afternoon. The meeting followed a letter from the Minister to enter talks on the restructuring of CIE.

Both unions had called a second day of protest for next Monday, January 27th, at the Minister's decision to proceed with restructuring plans and the issuing of licences to private operators without prior consultation. A four-hour stoppage last Wednesday caused widespread disruption to the travelling public.

NBRU general secretary Mr Liam Tobin said they would be meeting Mr Brennan on February 4th and action had been suspended pending its outcome. He added that the union would keep an open mind on the talks, but it retained the option of holding further stoppages if the talks were not successful.
