At least nine people died and about 30 others were injured when a tourist bus entering Kosovo rolled over this morning, the UN-led administration in the Yugoslav province said.

UN spokesman Mr Andrea Angeli said the passengers, believed to number about 40, were tourists travelling from the coastal Yugoslav republic of Montenegro.

"This happened at about 5 o'clock (4 a.m. Irish time) in the morning, just inside the territory of Kosovo near Kula," he said. "All indications up to now lead us to believe that it was a tragic accident".

The bus was returning from Ulcinj in Montenegro, a popular tourist destination for Kosovo Albanians, and was bound for the Kosovo capital Pristina, he said.

Mr Angeli said nine people, including two children, died and that all the other passengers were injured. Some were taken to a hospital in the town of Pec.

Pec Mayor Mr Ali Lajci said seven passengers died immediately and two had died later.
