Tipperary and Galway both enjoyed important wins today in this afternoon’s Allianz National Hurling League programme.
Tipperary notched up a 2-21 to 3-08 win over rivals Offaly in Birr, in a contest that was effectively over at half time.
At the break, Tipperary led by a huge margin of 2-16 to 0-3, largely due to consistent scoring from John O’Brien and Liam Cahill who notched up a goal each.
Offaly did manage to rally in the second half thanks to some fine work from Stephen Byrne in goal, and a goal apiece from Brendan Murphy, Brian Whelehan and Gary Hannify.
But the League champions were never overly troubled, and hung on for a deserved ten point win.
In Parnell Park, a disappointing game which saw both sides blaze a number of chances wide, ended with Dublin going down to Galway by a scoreline of 2-09 to 2-20.
Shane Martin got the Dubs off to a good start with two quick points, but the home side’s supremacy was short-lived, after a quick flurry of scores from Galway, culminating in a Mark Kerins goal, gave the Tribesmen the upper hand.
Martin again inspired the Dubs to rally back with a well-taken goal, to leave the score 1-11 to 1-09 at half time.
The second half was a somewhat dire affair, with both sides wasting plenty of scoring opportunities but Galway, with a strong late finish, held on for the win.
In today’s other League games, Westmeath and Kildare drew 1-09 to 0-12, Roscommon rolled past Antrim by 2-20 to 0-9, while Leitrim beat Cavan 2-09 to 0-11.
