Washington - Senator Strom Thurmond (98), the oldest and longest-serving US senator, was declared fine after collapsing yesterday on the floor of the Senate.

Senator Trent Lott said Mr Thurmond did not appear to be in any danger. The South Carolina Republican collapsed as the Senate was discussing a defence authorisation bill. He was quickly placed on a stretcher, but managed to make it to a wheelchair before being whisked away.
