Two brothers and their cousin appeared in court today on charges linked to a Garda investigation into a series of assaults and stabbings in Ballinrobe, Co Mayo.

Brothers Eddie and James Paul Sweeney and their cousin Paddy Sweeney appeared before Judge Conal Gibbons at a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court in Co Donegal.

Eddie Sweeney (20) of New Street, Ballinbrobe, and his cousin Paddy (21), of Bog Road, also Ballinrobe, were charged with assaulting John Francis Reddington (27) on August 16th at New Street, Ballnrobe.

James Sweeney (25), with an address at Glendallon, Sligo, was charged with assaulting Jonathan O’Malley at The Neale Rd, Ballinrobe, and causing him harm on the same date.

The offences are alleged to have occurred in Ballinrobe. Judge Gibbons was told that none of the defendants made any reply when charged and cautioned by arrestng gardaí that anything they said could be given in evidence.

All three were remanded in custody to Harristown District Court tomorrow. Judge Gibbons was told they were reserving their position on bail applications until then.
