A 26-year-old man has been treated in hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds to both legs in what appears to have been a so-called paramilitary-style punishment attack in north Belfast. The shooting is believed to have taken place in the loyalist Mount Vernon Gardens area. The RUC said it was investigating reports of a second man suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach in the same area.

In Portadown, a man in his 20s received a gunshot wound in a similar attack close to a bonfire at around 1.30 a.m. yesterday. His condition is not known. Meanwhile, a 21-yearold man was described as "seriously ill" in hospital after being set upon by at least five youths in Lisburn, Co Antrim, yesterday in the early hours. A British army patrol found the man and administered first aid until an ambulance arrived.
