A Palestinian gunman broke into a Jewish settlement in the West Bank last night, killing an Israeli man and a toddler and injuring two others.

The attack on the settlement of Negahot, near the West Bank city of Hebron, came as Israelis began celebrating the Jewish New Year of Rosh Hashanah.

Israel radio reported the attacker appeared to have been a lone gunman who got through the settlement's fence.

It said the attacker was shot and killed by soldiers guarding the settlement.

Holiday celebrations across Israel have been marked by heavy security, with thousands of officers deployed at synagogues, parks and intersections to try to prevent attacks by Palestinian militants.

An Israeli government spokesman said it had received more than 40 warnings about possible terrorist attacks over the two-day New Year's holiday.
