WASHINGTON - Republicans on the Senate Intelligence Committee said yesterday they were troubled by President Clinton's nomination of Mr Anthony Lake as director of the CIA and declined to predict he would be confirmed.

Senator Richard Shelby said: "Some past conduct troubles me," referring to Mr Lake's role in keeping secret a decision taken by the White House in 1994 that the US would not object when Croatia allowed Iranian arms to be shipped through its territory to Bosnia.
