Thieves set fire to a pensioner's mobile home last night when he refused to give them his car keys.

The 66-year old man living in a mobile home on the Ballyclaire Road in Newtownabbey, Co Antrim, was woken at around 11pm by banging on his caravan door.

Two men outside demanded he give them the keys to his car parked nearby. The man said no and refused to open the door.

The men then smashed a number of windows in the mobile home with concrete blocks, pushed a wheelie bin against the door and set it alight.

The terrified pensioner managed to escape through a window and run to neighbours to raise the alarm, said police. He was treated for minor injuries after his ordeal.
