A half-litre of Chateau Grand Monteil 1997 for £9.75 (great idea - not as mean as half a standard bottle); Cantina Tollo's Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 1997 for £12.50; Chateau Meaume 1995 (see above) for £14.95, and lots of New World mid-price goodies leading all the way up to fifth-growth Chateau Cantemerle 1989 for a surprisingly ungrasping £55. Proof that it can be done . . .
