Dictionary of Christian Quotations might have been a more appropriate title for this sprightly little volume the Bible makes an appearance on, by my reckoning, 472 occasions while the Koran scores just 17. Ms Pepper toes the party line on abortion, with an emotive quote from Mother Teresa ("Please do not destroy the child ), but is woollier and more liberal on the subjects of divorce, celibacy and even God, with Samuel Butler getting a wily word in "To the lexicographer God is simply the word that comes next to "go cart."
