October 1997: Taxi-drivers cause chaos in Dublin with a protest over an increased licence fee and the failure to increase fares.
December 1997: In an interim report Oscar Faber consultants recommend issuing 200 new taxi plates and a number of fare increases.
January 1998: Dublin City Council approves a further 200 taxi plates and votes for fare increases.
Yesterday: The final Oscar Faber report proposes a deregulation of the taxi market over 10 years and the issuing of 350 licences a year. It recommends that hackneys be allowed to use roof signs, bus lanes, mobile phones and radios.
