The death toll from flash floods that swept villages in northern Thailand at the weekend rose to 87 today, and officials said more rain was expected.

Search crews were using sniffer dogs to search thick mud drifts and ruined homes for 34 people still missing in Phetchabun province after Saturday's tragedy.

"We believe that we will find more bodies on the fourth day of the search," rescue official Mr Piyarat Toopwong told Reuters.

Twenty-two students, mostly girls, from one primary school were killed when floodwaters swept through the village of Nam Khor, officials said.

The floods destroyed 160 houses and damaged more than 190.

In New Delhi, India, heavy monsoon rains also disrupted traffic and telephone services today, a day ahead of the country's Independence Day celebrations.
